How it works

Prices from people, checked by people

WhatWePay collects individual price reports from the community and turns them into summaries you can trace back to every single report.

1. Someone reports a price

A signed-in contributor records the exact product and size, the price, the date and where they saw it. Shop details and a photo of the receipt or shelf are optional but help others trust it.

Every report is stored permanently as its own record. We never overwrite one price with another — a product can have hundreds of reports from different shops and places.

2. Others confirm or dispute it

  • Confirm if you independently saw the same price at the same place. A confirmation strengthens that report; it doesn't create a new one. You can't confirm your own report, or confirm one twice.
  • Report a different price if you saw something else. Different shops legitimately charge different prices, so a different price is a new report, not a conflict.
  • Dispute if you believe a report is wrong, with an explanation. Moderators review every dispute.

3. Reports move through clear statuses

  • Pending — a single, unverified report. Shown, but not counted in price summaries.
  • Corroborated — confirmed by at least 2 other contributors.
  • Accepted — reviewed and accepted by a moderator.
  • Disputed — questioned and awaiting review; excluded from summaries meanwhile.
  • Rejected — removed from summaries by a moderator, with a recorded reason. The record is kept.
  • Stale — older than the category's freshness window. Kept in history only.

Unusually high or low prices are flagged for a moderator to look at — they are never automatically deleted.

4. Summaries show how much to trust them

Lowest, typical and highest prices use only corroborated and accepted reports that are still fresh. An area estimate needs at least 3 different contributors and 2 different outlets; below that we say the data is limited. If every report comes from one shop, we say so — that is the shop's price, not the area's.

The full rules are in our price methodology.

Contribution guidelines

  • Only report prices you have seen yourself, recently.
  • Choose the exact size or variant. If it isn't listed, request it rather than picking something close.
  • Never include personal information about other people in notes or photos.
  • Only add a shop phone number the business displays publicly.
